The Poetry Of
Roger Keith Hughes
              The Christmas Box

See the box and turn it around.
Wonder at what’s inside.
Notice the wrapping, how well it’s draped,
you’ve never seen of its’ kind.

This present is for you, as well as me,
shake and feel if you hear a sound.
sniff, and scent the smell of it.
Wonder what its’ essence might be.

Rip the ribbons and lay them aside.
Plan to never throw them away.
You may wrap such a box in your future,
and be in need of the fray.

Turn the box to its easiest open,
and pry its deterrents aside.
What great delights did my benefactors,
intend from me to hide?

Look, behold the contents !

You say there is nothing inside?
I think you must be blind.
You say it was just for show,
no gift of any kind.

I say the box held some of the hopes,
I carry this very day.
And some of the loves I have had,
and chosen to throw away

A hundred dreams into thousands of words,
to convey my ideas to your mind.
You say there was nothing you could see?
I say, you must be blind.

You contend the box was empty,
its contents you fail to see.
I reach my own conclusion,
the box, meant only for me.
