    Waking In The Desert

the sun seeps, early,
beneath my door,
an inverse shadow, stopping,
just short
of my bedlette,
she invites me
to the day.
"it will be 102 today!"
she announces proudly.
"will you come out,
and play?"
how can I say no,
to her lavish face,
and fingers stretching,
into my heart?
I part my bed,
join my hand to hers,
and merrily skip,
across the desert floor.

Doves In The Cathedral

the moment that
I write a word,
it belongs to me,
that thought,
is my rite.
if I do not
name it,
I never owned it,
and it returns,
on glass spun wings,
to the place
of its birth,
high inside my mind.
it will visit, again,
pulling color
through my eyes.
next time,
I will open my hands,
and let it light.

Ruth Rice grew up in the Mojave desert with the sun, the wind and stones as her playmates.  They are still her friends and part of her inspiration for her poetry.  She sees the desert as a lover dreaming of the ocean and tells their stories.
The Sleeping Woman

I do not know
the sleeping woman
her language
nor the land where
she walks
for much of my life
she is my ambassador
in her world
as I am for her
in mine, and
leaves me messages
in the mind we share
echoes of her adventures
then she winks and
names them dreams.
