| Author Thomas E. Schott |
| Buried Above Ground is Tom Schott's first published book of poetry. Divided into four distinct chapters, he takes us from his youth to the present with insight and a well developed wit. He tackles difficult political, spiritual, government and social issues, yet ponders everyday happenings (see the poem "Dead Toad") with grace. Mr. Schott has and is living an interesting life, and that combined with his background in history makes this collection of poetry a compelling and enjoyable read. Poems For Here, There & In-Between is his sub title which is very aptly named. Bonita Sutterby Editor PoetWorks Press Tom Schott's "Buried Above Ground" is a book to celebrate. Tom adds his unique voice along with his ready wit and extraordinary wisdom to a variety of familiar life experiences. His imagination is wildly original, his language tough, quirky, comical, yet at heart the poems are profoundly humane and thought provoking. Thomas E. Mueller Associate Editor |
| Alexander H. Stephens of Georgia A Biography by Thomas E. Schott Southern Biography Series Bertram Wyatt-Brown, Series Editor ISBN-13: 978-0-8071-2106-1 Perfect Bound Alexander H. Stephens (1812-1883) was a celebrated Whig-turned Democrat who served as Congressman from 1843 to 1859, and an anti-secessionist who became Vice-President of the Confederacy. Thomas E. Schott has written the first scholarly biography that analyzes the interplay between the public and private Stephens and between the state and national politics during his contradictory career. "The most comprehensive review to date of Stephens personal life and political career... This volume will be the standard biography of Alexander H. Stephens for years to come." ---Journal of American History "A solid biography, a balanced, perceptive examination of an able but flawed Georgian who struggled with forces far beyond his control." ---American Historical Review "Stephens was a bundle of contradictions, a prominent Whig who became a Democrat, an anti-secessionist who became a Vice-President of the Confederacy, a Southern nationalist who became the symbol of states rights obstructionism in the Confederacy. Schott's full and interesting biography rescues Stephens from an undeserved historical oblivion, as it reveals the tragedy of a statesman whose world did not extend beyond Georgia. Stephens's very limitations speak volumes on why the idea of a single South crashed against the reality of many little Souths." ---Library Journal |

He has three grown kids of whom he is inordinately proud, a Ph.D in American history from Louisianna State University, a raft of history-connected publications, including a prize winning biography of Alexander H. Stephens, the Confederate vice president. He recently retired from a long career as a historian for various Air Force organizations and the U.S. Operations Command. Tom loves reading, baseball in general and the Texas Rangers in particular, Cajun cooking, history, playing chess, good wine, laughter, music and ideas on the edge. Not necessarily in that order. Long a lover of poetry, he developed a serious interest in writing poetry seven years ago. Buried Above Ground is his first published collection of poems. |
